Latis Scientific Ltd are looking to recruit a Sunday Shift Supervisor in order to assist with the management of a busy Microbiology laboratory ensuing customer queries are resolved.  

As a Sunday Shift Supervisor, you will assist with the supervision, training and development of Microbiology staff, ensuring workloads are efficiently managed and ensuring the highest standards are maintained for all work carried out in the Microbiology Laboratory.

You will be responsible for analysing and investigating results for a range of scientific work and will be expected to develop and maintain knowledge of standard operating procedures, ensuring appropriate action is taken when this has not been complied with.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Sunday - Thursday, on a variable shift pattern.

What will I be doing?

  • Undertaking and supervising the analysis of water from a wide variety of sources and, on occasion, other matrices in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Ensuring that samples are tested for the appropriate microbiological parameters using the correct methodologies and results are delivered within the desired timescales.
  • Assisting management with monitoring the activities of junior staff, ensuring that their performance in all areas of work is satisfactory and cost effective.
  • Assisting management with the day to day running of the Microbiology team, ensuring that the correct levels of staff are available at all times to ensure no disruption to sample throughput occurs.
  • Analysis and investigation of results in conjunction with the Scientific Officers, Senior Scientific Officers and Laboratory Manager.
  • Develop, validate, review, update and implement standard operating procedures, for work undertaken in their area of responsibility, in conjunction with senior staff.
  • Ensuring that procedures are followed routinely and departures or changes are brought to the attention of the Senior Scientific Officers and Laboratory Managers.
  • Undertake data entry using a Laboratory Information Management System
  • Undertake training of scientific technicians
  • To uphold and comply with the statutory provision of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and any other relevant legislation and policies or procedures relating to Health & Safety at Work.
  • The Senior Scientific Officers will uphold and comply with the requirements of International Standard EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 ‘General Requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories’.
  • Examining, preparing and authorising the production of analytical reports.
  • Producing routine and specialist analytical work, undertaking specialist site investigations and sampling as required.
  • Assisting management with supplier and manufacturer liaison in order to source the best deals for equipment and servicing for the Microbiology Laboratory, ensuring minimum machine down time and continuity of supply.
  • Ensuring that responses to breakdowns and emergency situations are effective and within agreed timescales.
  • Ensuring that an audit trail is fully completed and maintained to demonstrate investigation of any non-compliances associated with deviations from routine practises.
  • Ensuring that all quality control, method deviations or equipment breakdowns are reported promptly to the relevant people.
  • Assisting and documenting investigations, according to internal quality policies.
  • Participating in departmental meetings and preparing data for company reports.

What are the requirements?

  • The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level (scientific discipline or combination of disciplines) with previous supervisory experience of working in a laboratory environment.
  • The role requires a candidate who has an understanding of water sample matrices, inorganic analytical techniques and interferences.
  • Furthermore, background knowledge of water treatment and its effect on water quality, as well as being conversant with the EU and UK regulations relating to the microbiological analysis of water, is also essential.
  • The role requires a proactive candidate who is able to communicate with all levels of staff and who has the ability to supervise a team.
  • The successful candidate must also possess strong organisation skills, a good statistical understanding and excellent problem solving skills.
