What will I be doing as an Assistant Ports & Shipping Manager?

As an Assistant Ports & Shipping Manager you will be expected to have specific personal qualities and industry experience.

As an Assistant Ports & Shipping Manager you will liaise with your line manager and the different ports under their management.

Your principle role will be to ensure all vessel operations flow smoothly and that all team members are kept up to date. 

You must maintain day-to-day contact with individuals working in berth planning, commercial and operational roles.

As an Assistant Ports & Shipping Manager you will be assuming responsibility for vessel operations within the scope of your job description. This includes securing berth to all vessels on arrival at port and arranging bunkers. It also involves arranging phase-in and phase-out procedures/schedules whenever new tonnage is delivered.

As an Assistant Ports &  Shipping Manager you will be expected to play an active part in team communications for achieving and delivering results.

The Assistant Ports & Shipping Manager is expected to optimise bunker costs without jeopardising a vessel’s own schedule. They will also need to secure optimal resources utilised on vessels in port to maintain an overall schedule.

As an Assistant Ports & Shiiping Manager you will need:

You will be expected to have a degree, preferably shipping related or at the least demonstrate previous experience of an equivalent standard. It may not be essential to have specific Ports & Shipping Management experience. If you have good commercial business development and operational management experience in a ports or international logistics environment we can train the rest!

An Assistant Ports & Shipping Manager must have excellent organisational abilities and work in a structured manner.

As an Assistant Ports & Shipping Manager you will be expected to have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.  You will also need to demonstrate your ability to handle difficult situations that may call for an element of negotiation or problem solving.

You must have a sound understanding of the commercial and operational business processes within shipping.

Excellent financial and analytical skills are required in this role.

Must be familiar with computer programs associated with the industry including Microsoft Word.
